The Purpose of Life

I woke up one afternoon from my slumber when I was a little boy and I joined my parents who had just watched something on the TV. Someone in a jester's costume was singing this song, the refrain of which is printed on the photo below. I didn't know it then but it's the song sung by Feste (the Fool or Clown) at the end of Twelfth Night. It's a sad song that traces in words even a child can understand the different stages of life and how each stage always ends with the rain that rains every day. I remember feeling strangely depressed and I asked my parents, 'What is the purpose of living?'

Throughout my life (I was deeply immersed in religion in my youth), the answer to that question is simple and can be expressed in three words.  The purpose of life is:

To glorify God

Incidentally, that's also what Rick Warren says in his hugely popular book The Purpose-Driven Life. It's easily said but nobody can succinctly explain what glorifying God really means.

For me, it's very simple. Cause no harm to anyone, harbour no malicious or evil thought or intent, take life with a huge dose of humour and live life fully and abundantly, or in short, be a virtuous hedonist.

The song still haunts me because that's really what life is all about. But as long as I cause no one any harm, harbour no evil thought, take life lightly but live it fully, I cannot help but be amazed at how wonderful life is.

Lunch break

Had a lunch break in the middle of my hike in the wild jungle which abounds with fearsome wild ferocious animals.

Let's put an end to this once and for all.

As one of the very few Asian naturists (and even then, many of the few are closet naturists), I always find it hard for my community to accept that naturism has a place among Asians, as it has for all humanity. Confucian scholars disapprove of naturism as being contrary to Oriental "decency" and they view all naturists as having no sense of shame which was a huge thing to Confucius but they forget that Confucius lived hundreds of years before Christ at a time when not wearing the ugly scholar's hat would probably have been considered indecent.

Even my own brother once told me, no doubt with an oblique reference to me, that he could not understand how some men could bear to be seen naked when they obviously hadn't worked out in the gym. In this regard, I have to tread carefully because there is a cultural difference. I come from a culture where "Mind Your Language" is a hilarious comedy but in the West, it's viewed as racist and anti-Asian. It's hugely popular in Asia and most of us were disappointed when it was discontinued in Britain because of perceived racism. I was told that India even produced a similar version of the comedy.

But if I may speak for my own community, I know of many people who are reluctant to go openly naked for fear of being compared unfavourably with people from other communities. A friend of mine once told me very sincerely that if he had my body, he would be ashamed just to take off his shirt outside Asia. I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that my body, especially my upper torso, lacks muscular development but then, it is not uncommon to see many other Asian men with the same kind of muscular deficiency. Of course many people do work out in the gym these days and they have a great deal of muscular bulk but by and large, my kind of body is not uncommon in my community.

You may think that is the kind of mindset you would expect of a typical non-naturist. But it's affecting potential naturists in Asia. We have all read that naturism is not about comparing oneself with others and naturism is not a bodybuilding competition or a beauty pageant. But there are many in Asia who are unable to separate the concept of nudity from their need to compare themselves with others. It's the same with some Asian women. A few women have told me that they would not mind going naked all that much if they were more "well-endowed".  I have heard the same excuse from some Asian men as to why they are more self-conscious as if a naturist gathering is an audition for the porn industry.

I am by no means belittling our need for exercise; nor am I rubbishing the hard work put in by bodybuilders. We all should exercise and I have a lot of respect for bodybuilders. I have tried to do workouts at home and even in the gym. But I hate doing gym workouts. The only exercise I truly enjoy doing is running which I do every day. Anything else is a disagreeable chore. When I took this photo a few days ago, I really thought of doing a short work-out. But the flesh is weak (literally) and after taking a few pics, I decided to go for a run instead.

When a group in a local university wanted to film a documentary on naturism, they had a tough time getting willing "actors" who were not afraid to be filmed nude with their faces seen. After months of searching, I was the only naturist they could get. That's how pathetic the situation is in many countries in Asia.

This obsession with how we look must stop somewhere. There will always be physical differences in the different ethnic groups, whether it's colour, physical features, musculature or bone structure. These differences are what makes the human species so attractive in our diversity.  Hollywood may have given the world a skewed standard of what the norm should be for the average man or woman but it is only applicable to the fictitious world of movies.

How conformist are we?

Naturists are probably much less so. Defying social norms on clothing is one huge non-conformist behaviour. Some of us lessen the defiance by keeping our naturism a secret from friends and family. It becomes a secret indulgence and if you are familiar with my views, you will probably know that I am personally averse to making a secret out of something as natural as naturism.

Although I live in an extremely conservative society, I have never felt the need to conform to the dictates of my society. I have always followed my heart. I stick to what I like rather than what society tells me I should like. For this reason, my tastes remain largely the same. When most teenagers experimented with coffee, alcohol and cigarettes, I stuck to what I liked best. I never acquired a taste for alcohol which is incredibly bitter. I am persuaded the love people have for alcohol is something they acquire after having forced themselves to drink it repeatedly. Nobody can possibly take a liking to beer at the first sip. We have to force ourselves to drink it many times until it eventually grows on us. It's the same with coffee which is also bitter. I had friends in my earlier years who forced themselves to drink coffee because it was the "adult" thing to do but I drank only milk. I never felt the need to conform to society's idea of growing up.

And I must confess that I feel somewhat vindicated when recent research (published just a few days ago - 30 July 2021) shows that coffee is associated with a smaller brain volume and dementia. But don't worry if you are an average coffee drinker (as most people are) and you only drink one or two cups a day. It's only when you consume a lot of it that you need to be careful. For details, please see this.

Let's raise our glasses (of milk) and toast unconventionality.

When people misinterpret the meaning of my posts

It can come as a shock to any blogger when what he has written is totally misunderstood by his readers and an entirely wrong interpretation is given. Being a naturally insensitive person, I usually don't realise that what I have written has been misread until some very kind readers write to me in private to tell me what others are saying about my posts.

For one very recent post of mine, I received at least 5 different messages and not one of them understood the purport of my post. I am really very grateful to those who bother to comment on my posts or even write to me because I am honestly very insensitive and if I am not told how you react to some posts, I won't be the wiser. Please keep the comments and messages coming. If you disagree with a post, say so. If you think it's inappropriate, give me a firm reprimand.

Here's the link to the post in question with its accompanying photo:
